He wrote it for his newborn son, and it was the song playing in the delivery room on the day the baby arrived.
That detail changes how the performance plays. This is the writer-producer behind Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road,” Madonna’s “Take a Bow” and Eric Clapton’s “Change the World” singing something he wrote for an audience of one, on daytime television, a few years before most of the world thought of him as a performer at all.
