The star of 10 had taken the part — Rob Lowe’s mother — as a tiny role she did for fun; the comedy with Chris Farley and David Spade went on to become one of the most beloved cult classics of the decade. She arrives on a standard press tour and the conversation immediately stops behaving like one.
Derek answers, one by one, the stories the tabloids had spent fifteen years telling about her marriage to John Derek — including the name they actually called him. She does not deflect the premise or ask to move on; she takes the accusations in order and responds to them, which is something she was almost never given the room to do. She also reveals the famous comedy role she turned down, and the very strange reason why.
Around that, she talks about the craft and her own place in it, describing the actor’s job with a bluntness that borders on self-deprecating — “you’re a puppet.” She recounts meeting John Derek at seventeen, being fearless at the Oscars and terrified on a horse, and how the small Tommy Boy part actually came together.
