In this December 1997 broadcast of The Dini Petty Show, Bryan Adams performs “Back to You” live in the Toronto studio, one week after the single arrived. The song came off his MTV Unplugged album, but this is not the acoustic reading — it is the band-only studio rendition, played with the group he had toured with for over a decade, filmed in the same autumn as the famous acoustic record.
That makes it a genuinely unusual artifact. Unplugged is the version of these arrangements that the world knows, because that is the one that got pressed; this is the same material handed back to a full band in a television studio a few weeks later. It opened his visit to the show, with the single barely a week old and no established way for an audience to respond to it yet.
The performance is the practical answer to what Adams’s band actually was at that point in his career: four musicians who had been playing together long enough that a brand-new song could be delivered without any of the caution a first live outing usually carries. There is no acoustic scaffolding here and no studio to fix anything afterwards: the song is simply played, at tempo, by people who already knew where each other would be.
It aired one time, on December 15, 1997, and has not been seen since. This master tape has been meticulously optimized and preserved via the official archive of The Dini Petty Show, safeguarding a single-broadcast performance from the Unplugged period.
