In this February 1993 broadcast of The Dini Petty Show, Duran Duran arrive in Toronto days before the self-titled album now known as The Wedding Album reaches stores. “Ordinary World” is already climbing. Simon Le Bon and John Taylor sit down with Dini Petty at the exact moment the band comes back from the dead — a comeback that, at the time of taping, was still a hope rather than a fact.
Then Petty asks about the boat. In 1985, Le Bon’s yacht lost its keel during the Fastnet Race and rolled over with him trapped below deck. The surprise in this footage is not the story, which is known. It is how he tells it — the pacing, the detail he chooses to linger on, the tone he uses for the part where they could not get out. Petty lets it run.
The conversation moves through the band’s own history with the remove of people watching it from the other side: their 1980s videos played back in front of them, Maple Leaf Gardens, the “Reflex” video, Live Aid. Le Bon recites Hunter S. Thompson from memory, declares that women are always right, and describes the photograph that made him propose — which is also the cover of the album about to come out. And Petty asks him, plainly, where Roger and Andy Taylor went. He answers.
Duran Duran were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, and The Wedding Album was reissued, remastered, in April 2026. This is the conversation from the week it was first released. Unseen since its original 1993 broadcast, this master tape has been meticulously optimized and preserved via the official archive of The Dini Petty Show.
