In this 1994 broadcast of The Dini Petty Show, James Taylor — the voice of “Fire and Rain” and “Sweet Baby James” — tells Dini Petty that his own music is “lightweight” and that he does not believe it moved anyone. One of the most beloved songwriters alive, dead serious that he is no big deal. He arrives with one week left on a seven-month tour, and the fame switched off.
Petty pushes back. You have affected generations, she tells him; millions of people. He shrugs it off, and when she presses, he answers: “I wouldn’t lie to you on national TV.” That exchange is what turns a routine tour interview into something disarming, and it sets the register for everything after it. He explains why he will not read reviews, and what he thinks the press consistently gets wrong about him.
He is just as plain about the rest of his life. He is honest about drugs and alcohol and about getting clean, about the motorcycle night he met Kathryn, and about where the songs come from — “they come like dreams,” which is offered as a description rather than a mystique. Petty asks whether “Fire and Rain” meant he never had to work again. He answers that too, and then gives the one piece of advice he would pass to his son Ben. Not a war story anywhere in it: a man who found all of it smaller than you would think.
Around the edges there is sailing with the Clintons and Carly Simon’s stage fright. Unseen since its original broadcast, this master tape has been meticulously optimized and preserved via the official archive of The Dini Petty Show.
