In this 1994 broadcast of The Dini Petty Show, Lauren Hutton, the original supermodel and star of American Gigolo, sits down with Dini Petty at 50, doing something the fashion business had never let a woman her age do. She was back on the cover and back on top, and the conversation makes clear it was not an accident.
The heart of the interview is what happened in between. Two dozen Vogue covers followed, and then the industry did to her what it did to every woman at 40: she was out of business. Hutton talks about the “bag lady” fear that came with it. Then she describes what she saw on a New York sidewalk, in the faces of the women who stopped her, and how that became the reason she walked away from the movies and forced fashion to make room. She credits the photographs that brought her back, and she talks about turning 51.
The early chapters are just as unlikely. She came to New York with two hundred borrowed dollars, trying to fund a trip to Africa, and fell into modeling by mistake, starting at fifty dollars a week at Christian Dior. Diana Vreeland saw a face that everyone else had called wrong. Hutton explains what Vreeland saw in it.
Unseen since its original 1994 CTV broadcast, this master tape has been meticulously optimized and preserved via the official archive of The Dini Petty Show, capturing the moment a 50-year-old woman rewrote the rules of an industry that had already written her off.
