About this episode
In this November 1994 episode of The Dini Petty Show, Dionne Warwick sits down with Dini Petty on a bill that also features Leslie Nielsen and Dan Duran. Warwick opens with "Aquarela do Brasil" and talk of her son and her first grandbaby. She then traces her path from training as a concert pianist to working as Burt Bacharach's demo singer.
The story at the centre is the song she turned down. She sent it back as "a cowboy song." Bacharach reworked it for another singer, and it became a hit. Asked how that felt, she says her answer is one she can't give on television. She names her favourite Bacharach and David song and corrects a quote she says was never hers. Then the studio audience takes over. They ask about Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown and whether the three might ever record together, and she explains why no one in her family was surprised Whitney could sing. She also talks about Earth, Wind & Fire, Ella Fitzgerald, Marlene Dietrich and Lena Horne, the Oscar, the Emmy and the Tony, and the Psychic Friends Network.
